"A tree that possesses strong, healthy roots will survive many storms, A person with strong, healthy roots will also survive many storms, and throughout his or her life, will flourish and bear fruits of talent and self-worth. A wing is graceful and delicate to the touch, but strong and guiding in its purpose. It is the vision of the Lathrop Community Music Center to plant the seeds of hope, nourish the roots of love and lift our students with gentle wings to help them soar to their own levels of greatness. We give them more than music - we give them roots and wings!" --Sharon Schramel, President L.C.M.C. Board of Directors "Roots & Wings" is a collection of tracks written and performed by students at the Lathrop Community Music Center in downtown Chicago. Lathrop is a music education center offering urban youth and their families a chance to develop their creative talents as well as a sense of community in a positive, supportive environment. The "Roots & Wings" project was conceptualized by Deerpath artist Jeannie Tanner, executive director of the center, who also contributed several of her own songs to feature student performances. Recording time and costs at Baby Doin' The Jig Productions studios was donated by Deerpath Music president and artist Derrick Stout, and all proceeds from sales of the CD directly benefit programs at Lathrop. Jeannie's intent was not only to showcase the admirable talent of the students, but also to feature the wide range of musical styles embraced by them. Rap, R&B, Latin, soul, gospel, blues, rock and jazz influences abound. For all the students, it was their first experience in a recording studio, and according to Derrick, they were all "complete professionals". Many came away from the experience even more sure that pursuing music would be a major part of their lives. The CD is dedicated in loving memory to Randy Phillips, who served as a percussion instructor at the Center for five years.
